Chapters 15-17

Below are some questions/topics that pertain to chapters 15-17:

  • Were you surprised Tris's mother showed up to Visiting Day?
  • Tris's mother encourages Tris to find her brother and ask him to "research the simulation serum," but she does not provide an explanation for why. What information is Tris's mother withholding?
  • Drew and Peter see Edward as a threat and decide to stab his eye. Do you view this action as indicative of their "Dauntless" faction, or do you see it as the opposite? (Keep in mind the Dauntless are associated with traits such as fearlessness and bravery.)
  • Toward the end of chapter 17, Shauna comments on how they can no longer call Tris, "Stiff" anymore as Tris becomes more Dauntless-like. Would you say Tris is more motivated by her desire to be fearless like the other Dauntless, or by the fear evoked from knowing she's Divergent?

  1. When Drew and Peter stabbed Edward's eye, it was not an indicative of their Dauntless faction. It was an act of cowardice. They only did it because Peter wanted to be first. He was scared that Edward would always be better than him. It is mentioned many times in the book that hurting someone because you are afraid of them is an act of cowardice. What Drew and Peter did was not a brave act or fearless act. It wasn't brave, because he knew he wouldn't get caught. Even Tris knows that the Dauntless would not do anything. She says so in chapter 16.

  2. I think that Drew and Peter's actions represented what Dauntless had become (reckless, violent, prideful), not necessarily what it was intended to be (fearlessness and bravery).

  3. Miss Ronan,
When I posted before, I was trying to describe that Drew and Peter's actions were not indicative of how the Dauntless faction was supposed to be. I agree with you. What they did was indicative of the "new" Dauntless faction.

  4. I agree with Joyce and Miss Ronan. The Dauntless are supposed to be fearless. Peter and Drew weren't facing their fears when the stabbed Edward. If they truly were brave and fearless, they would have worked harder to beat Edward, but instead they took the cowardly route and hurt him. It isn't brave when you take on someone when they don't realize it. If Edward had been awake, he would have put up a fight, but the two boys knew that and chickened out by stabbing him when he was asleep.

  5. I wasn't surprised when Tris's mom showed up on visiting day because she always seemed supportive of her children even when they both chose to change factions.
